My Anti-Chaos Antidote: 7 Principles to Stay in Flow During Turbulent Times
Survival guide during tough times
Let's be honest—despite the spring weather lifting our spirits, we're living through tense, uncertain times. It's challenging to plan ahead when certain groups seem to be running amok and spreading chaos.
How do we manage this? How do we avoid discouragement? Protect ourselves? Stop ruminating? Balance our need for security with our desire for freedom? And how do we continue growing and investing while minimizing risk?
I'm sharing seven practices that help me stay agile during turbulent times.
🌊 7 Principles for Maintaining Flow in a Chaotic Environment
As someone who's highly empathetic and sensitive to my surroundings, these principles have been crucial in keeping me grounded:
1. Prioritize Energy Management
As I always say, it's not just about time—it's about energy. I'm careful about what feeds my mind and body, and who I listen to. I apply what I teach in Vitality: creating a recovery and protection bubble while staying attuned to my needs. I went hiking in the mountains this week, which did wonders for me (as you may have seen in my Instagram stories).
2. Gain Perspective
When my environment becomes turbulent, I regularly isolate myself to gain distance. Whether it's from my thoughts or situations, I like to sit down and write, journal, and observe things from the most detached perspective possible. I even observe myself in the third person.
3. Practice Letting Go
The control freak in me loves when things move quickly and according to plan. But I've learned to let go. Forcing things is the surest path to unhappiness! I strive (yes, it's still challenging for me) to focus on what I can control: my internal state, my response to events, my actions.
4. Cultivate Your Inner Circle
Let's face it—a positive, constructive environment makes all the difference! This week, I found myself in a conversation at an event with people who only talked about everything that's going wrong right now... it drained me! Yet when I spend time with the right people, I come away energized! Especially those who maintain optimism even when facing problems, focusing on solutions and enthusiasm for projects.
5. Stay Light and Adaptable
Things change quickly, the wind shifts rapidly... To navigate through challenges, we must stay light! Don't get too attached—keep your long-term vision and solid roots, but remain agile in execution. Keep things simple to adapt quickly! I'm avoiding heavy strategies and major commitments right now, keeping myself as free to maneuver as possible.
6. Make Clear-Headed Decisions
Emotions can cloud our judgment. They say never make major decisions in haste or under emotional duress. I always maintain a long-term perspective while adapting what's necessary (resources) for the short term. This balance allows me to optimize time, energy, and money resources. I don't hesitate to step back and use decision-making models like those in Decision Flow.
7. Focus on Creation, Not Rumination
My mind spirals quickly—whether it's ruminating, imagining future scenarios (often the worst ones), or generating ideas. I avoid staying in this mode too long. I've noticed my energy is optimal when I'm focused on creating. I prefer nurturing concrete projects rather than chaotic thoughts.
The Bottom Line
It's crucial to stay anchored in the present with your values, your internal compass, and a healthy environment while taking care of your resources (protecting them) while maintaining a very long-term vision.
Protect your energy
Protect your finances and invest for the long term
Make intelligent decisions
I practice what I teach, and I teach what I practice.
